Aaaaah, a new year, a fresh start. It’s like a clean slate and another opportunity to be the best you possible. If you’re anything like us, as you gently ease in to 2019, you’re wondering what the upcoming year will hold — what surprises and challenges lie around the corner — and what opportunities you can tackle this year to help you personally grow and succeed. Setting resolutions is one of our favourite ways to reflect and plan for the year ahead. This year, we have some particular safety ones in mind that will help empower you to live your best life.

Get Enough Rest

Ok, this may sound like a silly safety resolution — but we mean it! Prioritize your sleep this year, and make sure you are well rested before you get behind the wheel. Driving while drowsy can be as dangerous and driving while intoxicated. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drowsy driving is a factor in more than 100,000 crashes, resulting in 1,550 deaths and 40,000 injuries annually. Getting a good night’s rest on a regular basis is the only way to truly protect against drowsy driving — so aim for the expert recommended seven to height hours per night. Zzzzzzz!

Put Down the Phone

This one is a no-brainer. We’ve all heard the distracted driving stats — in Ontario distracted driving accidents have doubled in the past 15 year; every half hour someone in Ontario is injured due to distracted driving; in 2016 distracted driving accounted for more collisions than any other factor — we can go on! And with distracted driving laws becoming much tougher in Ontario beginning today, there is more incentive than ever to be law-abiding. This year, let’s all resolve to put an end to this bad safety habit.

Happy new year!
